I don't even know where to begin, but I guess I will by telling you that I fell deeply in love with Hong Kong. Even if we where there only for 2 nights, so basically we only had time to explore the city last Saturday, we managed to see quite a lot for one day. That took of course a 10 km walk and some sore legs during that day, but it was definitely worth it!
Do you remember the movies with Jackie Chan? Well, Hong Kong is exactly like in the movies: busy, effervescent, full of life, with wide boulevards, skyscrapers and red taxis. Oh, and we shouldn't forget the colourful, double deck trams called Ding Dong, which have a history of over 110 years and are not just the cheapest mean of public transport on the island, but also a major tourist attraction and one of the most environmentally friendly ways of travelling in HK.
But let's start right from the beginning: we stayed at the YMCA Salisbury Hotel, which had an excellent location. The hotel was very close to the subway station and to the harbour, but also near the city centre, restaurants and even to the shopping area. And the cherry on top was the great view of the Victoria Harbour we had from our room. So on Saturday morning, after having our breakfast at the hotel, we went to the pier and took the ferry to the island. We opted to go to Wan Chai Ferry Pier and to walk from there all the way to the Central Pier. Don't worry, we didn't choose the shortest way to get there, but quite a long and bumpy one, with so many stairs and slopes to climb. :) On our journey we admired the city, the buildings, the fuss, the beautiful gardens and parks (like the Hong Kong Park and the HK Zoological and Botanical Garden), we passed by a Catholic Church and then by a Mosque, after which we "landed" in SoHo - the very famous district full of restaurants, bars, nightclubs, art galleries and antique stores. Here can be found the Central Mid Levels Escalator which was built in 1993 and which was at that time the longest escalator system in the world.
From there we went on the Hollywood Road and then wandered the streets a little more until we found, by mistake or by luck, a small Ramen restaurant which didn't promise much from outside, but which had won 3 Michelin Stars 3 years in a row. Needless to say that the Ramen was extraordinary.
We then continued our road up to the Central Pier, but not before taking the Ding Dong for 2 stations. At the Central Pier we decided to go on the Hong Kong Observation Wheel and get a beautiful panorama of city, straight from above, after which, even if we were super tired and our feet were in so much pain, we also had a short walk on the promenade before taking the ferry and going back to the hotel.
Finally, I also have to tell you a few words about the "Symphony of Lights" which is a light and sound show taking place at the Victoria Harbour every night at 8 p.m. and which lasts for 14 minutes. This show is the largest permanent light and sound show according to the Guinness World Records, so once you are there you must not miss it because it's wonderful!
I will leave you now with the photos and my colourful, full of ruffles outfit :)
Have a lovely weekend,
Hugs!
